CHRISTMAS ISLAND

Christmas Island is an Australian island located in the Eastern Indian Ocean, about 360 km south of Java (Indonesia) and about 2,600 km Northwest of Perth (Australia).

The tropical island comprises an area of only 135 kmĀ² but harbours about 290 endemic animal and plant species. It is therefore one of the most important biodiversity hotspots of Australia. About 65 % of the island is protected in a national park.

The best known animal of Christmas Island is certainly the Red Crab. It is famous for its yearly migration during which millions of crabs migrate to the seashore to spawn. On Christmas Island, however, also the only breeding colonies of the threatened Abbott's Booby and Christmas Island Frigatebird can be found in the world.

For more information on the island please visit the Christmas Island Tourist Association.

NB: Don't get confused: There is another Christmas Island in the Pacific Ocean: Kiritimati, Republic of Kiribati.
